In order to understand the development of the concerto, it is necessary to fully grasp the concepts and ideas that molded the period that is known today as the 'Baroque Era'. As is often the case with most genres of artistic endeavor, developments in one discipline are heavily reliant upon the other disciplines among which they develop. Indeed, they are often so intimately intertwined with one another that it is impossible to truly understand one of them without cross-referencing related disciplines. Cross-cultural connections provide impetus for change and growth, and growth spurts rarely occur in a vacuum. Benton and DiYanni (2005) discuss these connections by separating them into distinct—but related—categories. As a result, they posit that there are three central types of connections: interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and transhistorical (Benton & DiYanni, 2005: xix).Interdisciplinary' connections are, by definition, the most concentrated. They are limited, first, to the culture itself; and, second, to the interaction amongst artists within the given culture. In addition, we must take into account the effects of those different works of art, whether they are artists themselves, or merely patrons of the arts. Finally, and closely related to interdisciplinary connections, are the cross currents that link different cultures to one another. The most distant link is that of transhistorical connections, the immediacy of which are often difficult to establish, as the passage of time is necessary to make any such connection valid
