We can assume that the audience for Tennyson in 1902 was considerably different to that in 1975, and that the “social determinants” were very different regarding how these products were read, to whom the works of art were directed, and how they were actually produced. For example, the 1902 edition of the book contains advertisements for other books at the beginning and the end of the publication. While this is a technique not dissimilar to contemporary, bestselling books and presses, with appendices of “If you liked this, you might like…” containing bibliographical information, in the light of Tennyson, it appears in the 1902 edition as a little incongruous to contemporary readers. Instead of these anchors, the 1902 edition contains more press opinions and praise for books in their catalogue rather than objective, unbiased opinion. It is printed that Ralph Waldo Trine’s “book makes for happiness and contentment” and that “these are eloquent essays on conduct and faith, which will probably attract many readers.”[5] Instead, in the 1975 edition, sobering technical and academic information is provided in the accompanying introduction. It would be extremely unlikely for a “bestselling” book, or one which seeks to advertise a book of poetry to an undiscerning audience to contain the following reference
